Moments in Salt

Martha and I took at trip to an old salt mine here in Nemocon, Colombia. It was about an hour and half car ride to get there.

Here is the tunnel leading down to the mine.

In this part of the mine they had a long canal filled with water. Because there is no wind the water sits very very still, and is a perfect mirror. I had to ask if it was water, because at first I thought we were looking down a cave! The blueish light you see is being reflected off the water by the salt, it is not man made! You can also see the lights that are man made.

This is called the salt waterfall. It's hard to tell in these pictures, but it did look just like a waterfall! Here Martha and I are standing in front of it.

This heart is made of a pure block of salt. It weighs over 3,000 pounds! You can't tell the size here, but it was fairly big, although I would have never guessed it weighed so much! There is a red light reflecting off it, other wise it's a semi transparent white color.

There were some men doing some sort of work down there. They were chipping away at the walls. Martha asked if we could take a rock, and they said sure! So I grabbed a few of the rocks :) They sell them in the little store....but this was free! :)

The salt makes some pretty unusual designs. It almost looked liked snow, and icicles.

This one is without the flash.

Above: something I would not want to really run into! This one was on display, along with some other pretty gross looking bugs!

A picture of me in front of some salt :)

And here is Martha on our climb out of the mine. You can't tell by her nice smile in this picture, but we were REALLY winded! It was a steep climb up :)

It was a fun day! Martha is a very very busy person, so it's nice when she has some time, and we get to do some things together!
